The heart of Umicore´s MEA technology

Platinum (Pt) is the standard active ingredient for anode and cathode catalysts in hydrogen-fueled proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC). Platinum-Ruthenium (PtRu)-based electrocatalysts find wide-spread use for Cotolerant anodes in PEMFC stacks running on methanol or reformate gas. Iridium (Ir)-based catalysts are the preferred anode catalyst for the electrolysis reaction to produce hydrogen and oxygen from water in a reverse fuel cell reaction.
Umicore develops elyst™ electrocatalysts for the distinctive needs of different fuel cell applications and specific operation conditions using proprietary processes and materials. Umicore’s catalysis expertise is based on more than one hundred years of innovative development in precious metals and catalyst technology.
elyst™ electrocatalysts are developed for use in Umicore pMembrain™ Membrane Electrode Assemblies (MEAs) using a broad range of coating technologies.
For the commercial production of elyst™ electrocatalyst products standard or proprietary carbon black supports are used. Precious metal contents in our standard products range from 20 wt.-% to 60 wt.-% and above. For special applications like DMFC or water electrolysis, precious metal black catalysts are utilized.
elyst™ electrocatalysts are characterized by uniform platinum dispersion that is stable even at high platinum loading levels. In our proprietary manufacturing processes very fine nano-sized particles in the range of 2-5 nm are distributed on carbon black.
elyst™ PtRu electrocatalysts are characterized by an improved tolerance to CO levels of up to 100 ppm and more. Airbleed requirements can even be eliminated for operation under various moderate CO levels.
elyst™ Ir electrocatalysts are characterized by a stable morphology with high activity for the electrolysis reaction.
Umicore has over one hundred years of experience in worldclass catalyst research and development. Our electrocatalyst products and expertise will contribute not just the evolutionary progress but also the revolutionary development steps that are necessary for the successful market introduction of fuel cell products.
